AHMAD NIZAM ABBAS
He has acted for clients from diverse countries in their family disputes involving cross-border disputes on children and matrimonial assets with total value of more than $100 million. He has also represented various accused persons who were facing the death penalty, in the High Court and Court of Appeal. His probate experiences span various international jurisdictions.
He is the current Chairman of the Muslim Law Practice Committee (MLPC) of the Law Society and deals with Family Law and Probate work in both the Civil Law and Syariah Law systems. He was a member of the Law Society’s team which participated in the Parliamentary Select Committee Hearing on the amendments to the Administration of Muslim Law Act back in 1997. He has contributed to the development of Muslim Law in Singapore through the MLPC as well as being involved in several significant cases at the MUIS Appeal Board and Syariah Court of Singapore.
In December 2009, he was appointed by the President of the Republic of Singapore to sit on the Panel of Advisers of the Juvenile Court (now renamed Youth Court) and he also sits on the panels at the Vulnerable Adult Court and Maintenance of Parents’ Tribunal.
Since May 2010, he has been an Associate Mediator of the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC). He was one of the pioneer members of the accredited Family Law Mediator scheme of the Singapore Mediation Centre in 2015.
Ahmad Nizam Abbas graduated from the University of Keele, United Kingdom and was called to the called to the Bar of Lincoln’s Inn in UK in July 1992. He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in January 1994. He obtained a Master of Laws in Islamic Law and Finance from the Singapore Management University in 2013. He is a Facilitator and Trainer at the Singapore Institute of Legal Education for 3 subjects – Family Law, Wills, Probate and Succession Planning and Mediation.
He is passionate about teaching and has been involved in diverse ways with all 3 law schools in Singapore. In 2020, he co-created the first ever module in Islamic Family in Singapore for the LLB program at the Singapore University of Social Services (SUSS). He has also collaborated with National University of Singapore (NUS) on its Muslim Law Practice Course. He is a member of the Expert Panel of Singapore Management University (SMU) Pro-bono Centre.
